General Information

< Hokkaido >
Hokkaido is by far Japan's largest prefecture. It consists of Japan's entire northern island and its surrounding islets. Hokkaido is cooler than the rest of Japan, and the merciful lack of Japan's muggy summers and rainy season makes it a very popular domestic destination between May and August.
Most of Hokkaido was settled by the Japanese within the last 100 years, compared to the thousands of years of Japanese history and pre-history. As a result, its architecture and cities are more modern, and mostly based on grid layouts as in the West.

< Sapporo >
Sapporo is the capital of Hokkaido and Japan's fifth largest city.
The development of Hokkaido began on a large scale at the start of the Meiji Period. Sapporo was chosen as the island's administrative center and enlarged according to the advice of foreign specialists.
Sapporo became world famous in 1972 when the Winter Olympic Games were held there. Today, the city is well known for its ramen, beer, and the annual snow festival held in February.

In August, the average high temperature is 26°C (79°F) while the low is 19°C (65°F).
