We welcome you to Photonics in Switching (PS) 2008. Today, the demand for both established and new services keeps growing whilst recent developments in Eastern Asia, Northern America and Europe manifest that there are coordinated efforts to unlock the bandwidth bottleneck in the access part by the FTTx technologies. These developments in the access network are now imposing formidable tasks in the backbone: the network should become more dynamic, the nodes should be service agnostic, both network and nodes should support capability of switching/cross-connecting tens of Tb/s traffic, maintain QoS and also guaranteeing other end-to-end performances. In this context, photonics in the switching node which includes both transparent and opaque switching will provide excellent component technologies. The optimum blend of optical and electronic technologies is being sought for constructing cost-effective nodes taking into account a variety of performance constraints.
Photonics in Switching (PS) is a historic conference on optical switching created at the end of the 1980s. Mixing an active academic community with manufacturers and operators, it is aiming to address these issues and to pave the way towards next generation networks.
